Hatchet forging

Starting with a piece of cutting edge from a snow plow or excavator bucket, we cut up chunks that will fit into the forge for annealing. Then we cut out the rough blank using a plasma cutter. Next we went back to the forge to start forging to shape. Using the overworked 50lb power hammer, we draw out the handle. Then we twist a six inch section for the handle.

Moving on to the head, we draw out the basic shape on the power handle, then finish using a hand held hammer over the anvil.

The last step is to heat treat the head using the residual heat treating technique I learned from Mike Pick. See the heat treating section for more info on this.
